Toyota unveils smaller hybrid concept car
Posted: January 12, 2010  |  by: Cynthia Calderon  |  source: USA Today

Toyota unveils all new Hybrid, the FT-CH Hybrid at the North American International Auto Show.

DETROIT — Toyota unveiled a perky lime-green hybrid concept car here Monday that could be the first step in what it confirmed is a plan to expand its Prius brand into a broad line of vehicles. The FT-CH hybrid shown at the media preview of the North American International Auto Show is 22 inches shorter, would use less gas and would potentially be much cheaper than the current Prius, which starts at $22,000.

It could join a planned line of "dedicated hybrids" — no standard gas-engine version — intended to leverage the Prius name. "It's hard to argue that Prius hasn't become an icon for hybrid technology," said Jim Lentz, Toyota's U.S. president.

Toyota was putting finishing touches on the car, designed in Nice, France, up to the last minute: Attendees were warned the paint might still be wet.

The FT-CH is aimed at younger, less-affluent buyers. Toyota says "eight-bit styling" is designed to appeal to those that grew up with 1980s video games.

Yoshimi Inaba, president of Toyota North America, said he sees opportunity for such a smaller hybrid. Prius got bigger when redone for 2010 and became more of a family car. "There's room for a more affordable hybrid suited for younger buyers," Inaba told reporters.

Toyota, once revered for knowing before anyone else where the market was heading, has been slow to broaden the Prius brand. Now, there are numerous hybrid rivals and more coming soon.

"If this had come a few years ago, it would have made much more sense," says Jessica Caldwell, director of pricing and industry analysis at Edmunds.com. "But their hold on the hybrid market is slipping away. If it doesn't come out soon, I can see them losing their grip on it fast."

Roger Kempa, an MBA student at Michigan State University, recently surveyed Generation Y buyers for Deloitte and found them willing to pay about $1,000 more for a vehicle with a hybrid-only brand. But they no longer see "Prius" and "hybrid" as synonymous. "My impression is that there was a lot more of that five years ago, but now the word hybrid has been separated from Prius," he says.

Toyota said it will launch eight new hybrid models in the next few years and will begin introducing plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles in 2012. It also said it will have hydrogen-fuel-cell-based electric vehicles in 2015 in global markets.

Toyota Joins U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Posted: December 02, 2009  |  by: Cynthia Calderon  |  source: Toyota News

Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. (TMS) announced that it has joined U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WasteWise program.

As the first national voluntary solid waste reduction program, WasteWise encourages organizations to reduce municipal solid waste through waste prevention, recycling and buying or manufacturing recycled products.

“The WasteWise program is a great opportunity to recognize the efforts of Toyota associates that contribute to our waste reduction and recycling efforts every day,” said Bob Wade, corporate manager of environmental, hazardous material and safety.

In 2008, TMS recycled over 86 percent of its waste, more than 24,000,000 pounds. U.S. EPA estimates that the amount of greenhouse gas reduced due to TMS collective recycling and reduction efforts* are equivalent to the annual emissions from 10,549 passenger vehicles. Toyota estimates that the amount of greenhouse gases reduced from recycling efforts is the equivalent of all 2nd generation Prius sold in the U.S. in 2008, more than 154,000 vehicles, increasing their fuel economy from 46 mpg to 52 (combined city/hwy) for the year.

A major focus of the WasteWise program is waste prevention – actions that minimize or eliminate the generation of waste – with the goal of decreasing the amount of material that must be recycled or thrown away. TMS North American Parts Operation supports waste prevention through the use of over 45,000 reusable metal containers instead of cardboard and wood pallets. These containers move parts throughout the TMS distribution network and have eliminated the need for 25.9 million pounds of wood and 9.4 million pounds of corrugated cardboard in fiscal year 2009 alone.

“The greenhouse gas reduction focus in our industry is primarily on vehicle emissions,” said Wade. “But Toyota works to reduce emissions throughout all aspects of our business. From energy efficiency in our facilities to waste reduction and recycling, our goal is to minimize our environmental footprint. ” More than 1,100 organizations have joined the WasteWise program since 1994. WasteWise partners include manufacturers, retailers and service firms from more than 50 different industry sectors.

Toyota Goes Electric at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show
Posted: October 21, 2009  |  by: Cynthia Calderon  |  source: CNET REVIEWS

Although a leader in hybrid cars, generally conservative Toyota has seemed uninterested in developing electric cars--until now. At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota unveiled the FT-EVII, an electric car concept.

In putting together the FT-EVII, Toyota used its own off-the-shelf technologies, such as the iQ platform and components from its Synergy hybrid system. Although not on sale in the U.S., gasoline and diesel-powered Toyota iQs are sold in Japan and the U.K. For the power train, Toyota went to lithium ion batteries for the FT-EVII, as opposed to the nickel-metal-hydride power pack from its current hybrid vehicles.

Where many electric cars in development, such as the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiev, are specified to get about 100 miles range, Toyota only proposes 56 miles for the FT-EVII, and a top speed of 62 mph. These figures limit its use to sprawling metropolises, such as Tokyo, London, and New York.

Toyota also wanted to break away from traditional notions of automotive performance, so did away with a conventional steering wheel or foot pedals. Instead, the FT-EVII gets a weird-looking yoke, a piece of sculpture that supports an instrument cluster, navigation device, and a cup holder.

The FT appellation, which we previously saw when Toyota announced the FT-86 concept, also on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, stands for Future Technology. We expect to see many more FT concept cars from Toyota in the coming years.

Toyota Thinks Electric
Posted: October 21, 2009  |  by: Cynthia Calderon  |  source: Bisbane Times

Having dominated the hybrid market with the petrol-electric hybrid Prius, Toyota is carving itself an electric future with a plug-in hybrid and a rechargeable electric-battery car.

Toyota will begin leasing plug-in hybrid vehicles within months as part of an ambitious plan to grow its environmental presence and branch out in to electric vehicles that can be recharged from household powerpoints.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Tokyo motor show - where Toyota is expected to reveal a vehicle that hints at an electric car that will go on sale in the United States in 2012 - the world's leader in hybrid technology revealed it will begin leasing a plug-in hybrid Prius before the end of 2009.

Toyota's project general manager of research and development, Yutaka Matsumoto, said 500 plug-in Priuses would be leased throughout Japan, Europe and the US with the view to monitoring the vehicles in everyday use and gauging feedback from drivers.

"To use the remaining oil [in the world], improving fuel efficiency is the highest priority," said Matsumoto.

Unlike a Prius, which runs purely on petrol (but uses as little as half that of a similar sized vehicle) the plug-in hybrid version can run for longer distances on electric power and be recharged from a regular powerpoint.

While it looks identical to a Prius - albeit with stickers to highlight its technical advantage - it uses more efficient lithium-ion batteries and a modified version of the Toyota hybrid system.

"While it operates as an electric vehicle in short distance driving it automatically shifts to a conventional hybrid vehicle with excellent fuel efficiency in mid- and long-distance driving," said Matsumoto.

Unlike the rival Chevrolet Volt that's due on sale in 2010 - and to be sold in Australia as a Holden Volt from 2012 - the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid can use the petrol engine to drive the vehicle.

The Volt's petrol engine will only be used to recharged the batteries when they run low. Matsumoto says hybrids are a key plank to reducing fuel use.

"Although hybrid vehicles only account for less than 4 per cent of our sales, they contribute to a 12 per cent reduction in CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions from our vehicles."

Consistent with moves to use alternative energy Toyota says it will adapt the Prius to run on other fuels.

"Our future plug-in hybrid vehicles using bio-fuels and solar power generation will have the possibility of helping to realise completely carbon-free motoring," he said.

The move to lease vehicles is similar to one made by Mini, which has 500 electric vehicles under evaluation through a lease program.

Mitsubishi, too, is looking to lease its upcoming i-MiEV electric car, which will be on Australian roads in 2010.

As for full electric vehicles, Toyota will not be the first to sell what many see as the future of the car. The company is planning to sell an electric car in the US by 2012.

"Toyota intends to introduce EVs by around 2012 into the US market by taking advantage of our hybrid vehicle development experience, including battery, (electric) motor, inverter and its control technologies."

The car is expected to have a range of about 80km, which is enough for the majority of daily commuting needs and on par with other planned electric vehicles from the likes of Mitsubishi and Nissan.

As for when the electric vehicle will be sold outside the US, "nothing has been decided yet".

Matsumoto says a dedicated battery research division is looking to improve the range of li-ion batteries to 200km by 2020.

Car makers have long said that the limiting factor of batteries is their bulk and weight and relatively short range compared with a fuel tank.

He says Toyota is also researching new battery technologies with the view to significantly increasing efficiency and driving range.

However, like other brands, Matsumoto says conventional petrol and diesel will continue, even in the longer term due to the requirements of heavier vehicles and commercial vehicles.

"Diesel is a needed technology in some segments," he said, which also saying that the increased costs associated with making diesel engines meet future emissions regulations would play in to the hands of petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, which are more affordable than ever.

"At some time hybrid can be more cost effective than diesel," said Matsumoto.

Toyota Unveils A New Hybrid Luxury Sedan
Posted: October 20, 2009  |  by: Cynthia Calderon  |  source: National Post

Toyota has unveiled the Sai, a new hybrid luxury sedan, aiming to keep its pole position in environmentally friendly vehicles.

The new vehicle, which will go on sale only in Japan in December, is a compact sedan with a 2.4-litre engine and fuel economy of 23 kilometres per litre, against 38 km per litre for the third-generation Prius.

It is the second Toyota-brand vehicle that is available only as a hybrid, after the Prius.

“If it does not carry a hybrid engine, a sedan of this size would require twice as much fuel,” says Shigeru Nakagawa, Toyota’s project manager.

“When people [who are] driving a luxury car want to be more environmentally friendly, they may want a slightly more upscale vehicle than the Prius,” he says.

The Sai will have a price tag starting from 3.38-million yen ($39,100), Toyota says.

Toyota aims to sell some 3,000 Sai vehicles a month. It sold 31,758 Prius vehicles in September, helped by government tax breaks and subsidies for fuel-efficient vehicles.

Toyota is a pioneer in hybrids, which run on a combination of gasoline and electricity and are in strong demand because of worries about global warming.

Last month, Toyota said that global sales of its hybrid vehicles had topped the two-million mark since their launch in 1997. It also sells a Lexus sedan, the HS 250h, that is available only as a hybrid.

The company also announced that it had begun selling the new Prius hybrid in South Korea, along with its best-selling Camry and the RAV4 sport-utility vehicle. Until now Toyota has sold only Lexus-brand models in South Korea, where the car market is dominated by domestic producers such as Hyundai.

Tree Campus USA Program Going Strong in Its 2nd Yr

Arbor Day Foundation Holding Five Tree-Planting Events to Celebrate

As part of its one-year anniversary celebration of the official launch of the Tree Campus USA program, the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota will plant trees on five college campuses across the United States this fall. The first tree-planting event will be held at the University of Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 11.

In the fall of 2008, the Arbor Day Foundation started the Tree Campus USA program to recognize colleges and universities that practice sound campus forestry. The aim of the program is to honor college campuses and the leaders of their surrounding communities for promoting healthy urban forest management and engaging the campus community in environmental stewardship.

Since its inception, Tree Campus USA has been supported by a total of $1.3 million in grants from Toyota. During the initial year of Tree Campus USA, the Arbor Day Foundation honored 29 colleges and universities that met the program's standards.

"Teaming up with Toyota to plant trees on college campuses across America is the perfect way to celebrate a successful first year for Tree Campus USA," said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Tree Campus USA has already encouraged students and volunteers to work together for the benefit of their community. Tree Campus USA will have a lasting impact because it will inspire people to take care of many wonderful campus forests."

Tree Campus USA tree-planting events this fall will be held at the University of Maryland, Duke University, Cornell University, Tulane University and the University of Washington. About 400 trees will be planted during these events.

Schools are required to meet five core standards of tree care and community engagement in order to be recognized as a Tree Campus USA college or university. Those standards are: establishing a campus tree advisory committee; evidence of a campus tree-care plan; verification of dedicated annual expenditures on the campus tree plan; involvement in an Arbor Day observance; and the institution of a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body.

"Toyota has been a proud partner of the Arbor Day Foundation since 2001," said Patricia Pineda, group vice president of Toyota Motor North America. "The success of the first year of Tree Campus USA truly shows how the program is meeting the needs of the next generation of environmental stewards." More information about the Tree Campus USA program is available at www.arborday.org/TreeCampusUSA.

Toyota Community Support National Public Lands Day

Employees from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. Along with community volunteers and members of local boy/girl scouts gathered on Saturday, Sep 12th, 2009 at Fort Boonesborough State Park as part of the 16th annual National Lands Day Activities

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Last year, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants and planted 1.6 million trees.

The activities at Fort Boonesborough State Park, entitled “Fun at the Fort,” included improving the safety of the park’s three hiking trails with the addition of concrete steps and cutting back overgrown trees and shrubs. In addition, volunteers constructed and installed wooden benches to expand the park’s existing outdoor classroom for children, and also built bluebird houses and planted trees. Projects ranged from expert to kid-friendly and many were led by officials from the National Audubon Society, American Chestnut Foundation, and Bluegrass PRIDE, a local environmental education society.

“It’s very heartwarming to see our team members, their families and other community members volunteer to improve one of our state’s beautiful landmarks,” said Steve St. Angelo, president of TMMK. “Kentuckians take a lot of pride in making this state a beautiful place to live.”

Toyota Motor Corp. has overtaken General Motors Co. as the top manufacturer of new vehicles purchased under the U.S. Cash-For-Clunkers Program

Toyota made 18.9 percent of all new vehicles whose clunkers deals had been submitted, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in its second report on the incentive. GM accounted for 17.6 percent as of Friday, down from 18.7 percent on Aug. 5, when the initial tally was released.

The Toyota Corolla remained the top new car purchased. The Honda Civic passed the front-wheel-drive Ford Focus as No. 2. No. 3 Ford Focus. No. 4 Toyota Camry. No. 5 Toyota Prius. No. 6 Hyundai Elantra. No. 7 Ford Escape FWD. No. 8 Honda Fit and The No. 9 Nissan Versa and No. 10 four-wheel-drive Honda CR-V bumped out the Chevrolet Cobalt and inventory-depleted Dodge Caliber in the top 10.

As of Friday, dealers had submitted 358,851 deals for the clunkers initiative, which gives consumers vouchers of up to $4,500 for trading in gas guzzlers for new vehicles with better fuel economy. Those deals were worth about $1.5 billion in voucher reimbursements, or half the $3 billion in U.S. funds allocated for the incentive.

Great Review of The 2010 Prius
Posted: June 16, 2009  |  by: Cynthia Calderon  |  source: Toyota USA Blog

Big Style Points for the Toyota Prius. More than just a Hybrid, it's a Fashion Statement.

"Reviewers and experts alike have given the Prius fantastic rankings and scores just based on the Prius’s exterior. Considering how sleek and stylish most hybrid cars look, being able to win them out for style has shown that the exterior must have some major kudos to turn that many heads."

It's sleek styling is designed to move faster and smoother on the road and "the very shape of the car has a low coefficient drag and is functionally and aesthetically pleasing."

"The car’s exterior is incredibly unique and innovative, and so the Prius is easily identifiable by the style and make of the vehicle, and not nearly as much for the fuel-efficiency that the vehicle boats."

The interior not only enhances visibility and comfort, but the control panel gives an easier way to navigate over all its outstanding features. "Buttons and controls are all centralized right at the driver’s fingertips around the steering wheel so that you don’t have to stretch across the car anymore just to change the radio station. Even some of the engine’s features are now controllable by the dashboard."

There is no doubt in that Toyota has given a tremendous amount of time to create a comfortable-easy-to-navigate-sleek-styled-fashionable car. Not to mention Eco-Friendly and its technology features such as Bluetooth cell phone interface make the car a much safer and enjoyable experience.

Reports indicate that the Toyota Motor Company is expected to overhaul its entire U.S. operations to boost sagging sales. According to sources all engineering, manufacturing and sales divisions will be gathered under the supervision of one single executive. Apparently, Yoshi Inaba, a former senior executive who left the auto maker in 2007, has been formally asked to oversee much of the U.S. business. Mr. Inaba, 63, currently runs an international airport near Toyota's headquarters. Mr.Inaba was credited with laying the groundwork for Toyota's fast growth in the U.S. over the past several years. Sources say it is highly unusual for the auto maker to bring back an employee who has left the company. Toyota is expected announce that its New York unit, Toyota Motor North America Inc., will now function as its U.S. headquarters responsible for managing all engineering, manufacturing and sales divisions. That is a departure from its previous responsibilities which included investor relations and government affairs. The unit's current chairman, Akio Toyoda, is expected to retain his position. People familiar with the situation said Mr. Inaba, a fluent English speaker, is expected to be named president of Toyota Motor North America and live in New York and is also expected to succeed Yuki Funo as chairman of Toyota's U.S. sales and marketing arm in Torrance, California. The unit's current president, Jim Lentz, is also expected to keep his position.
